Lyle Lovett – That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas)

People who get identified as “Texas songwriters” often get tagged as such because they frequently or even occasionally write about their home state. And most of the songs on that topic are, in my opinion, quite nauseating. But here is an example of a song that’s about Texas, but is also humorously aware of itself.

The real accomplishment here, though, is that instead of presenting an insular, stand-offish front to non-Texans, it instead invites them in with open arms. This makes sense for Lyle Lovett, who regularly incorporates musical influences far beyond his native region. On this track, indeed, there’s a gospel element thrown in with the western swing to set the song apart from similar efforts.
