Led Zeppelin – Ten Years Gone

Although they are most well-known for helping give birth to what would become heavy metal, the unlikely quartet of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham can also be credited with bringing a more orchestral approach to rock and roll. Unlike contemporaries such as The Moody Blues, who actually brought an orchestra into the studio, Zeppelin turned the rock combo into its own orchestra, with clearly defined parts, counter-melodies, and intense dynamics, well-showcased in today’s tune.

This is one of the things that has ensured the band’s legacy well past its trademark heavy reworkings of old blues tunes. Many groups could ape that approach, but very few can also pull off a song of this complexity.

  1. Beautiful and classic.
