Simple is good. Deceptively simple can be better. The masters of the latter are Cake.

The lyrics speak a simple, singable truth, and the chord progression is not complicated. However, the melodic arrangement builds subtly until by the end of each time through, the listener has been taken on quite a journey. The band also makes use of the aforementioned instrumental hooks to bolster the vocal ones. Innovative without being showy. Just try playing the tune yourself, you’ll see how hard it is to do right.
