Daily Song Study

Doug Kwartler – Morning Burn

In songs on January 4, 2012 at 9:01 am

I’ve mentioned my time in Long Island with Doug Kwartler before, and here’s another of his impeccable melodies.

Delivered with fierce intensity, it easily stands with anything done by more prominent roots-rockers like the Jayhawks or Son Volt. The progression from verse to chorus is done gradually, each chord leading inevitably to the next, so that by the time you get to the end of the phrase, there’s really nowhere else you could’ve gone.

Being able to find that path is tricky business, indeed almost a study in itself. And listening to writers who know how to navigate it is a good step in the right direction.
