Dawes – A Little Bit of Everything

As discussed here before, deceptively simple can be difficult to achieve. And few modern practitioners are as adept as Dawes.

While certainly drawing from the Jackson Browne school of melody and arrangement (and wailing slide guitar), there’s much more going on here lyrically than in most of Browne’s tunes. Three stories are told in this song, bound together by an overarching theme, wrapped up at last in the ending. It’s a conceptual arc, a sort of musical dissertation.

Often people make songs that are either catchy or profound, but it’s nice when the two can come together. To quote the lyrics:

It’s not some message written in the dark
Or some truth that no one’s seen
It’s a little bit of everything
